Class230 waits at Bletchley

A Diesel Powered D230 in Service at Beltchley

Vivarail, whose innovative rebuilds of former District Line tube trains are proving popular economic solutions on lighter used lines, achieved a first on January 15th as an all-electric version of one of therir Class 230 trains travelled 40 miles on battery power alone.

The new prototypes have been on extensive testing on the Bo'ness & Kinneil heritage rail line near Edinburgh.

Meanwhile more conventional diesel and diesel-electric versions are already in service. The picture shows a diesel Class 230 in Bletchley Station where three trains are now providing a regular Monday - Saturday service on the Marston Vale Line between Bletchley and Bedford. It is expected that the service will be extended to include Sunday services in the summer.

These trains come during a time of desperate need for a cleaner, greener and affordable train network as the UK strives for net zero carbon by 2050.

The Class 230 train is able to replace ageing diesel stock on a number of lines, not only reducing carbon emissions but also providing an enhanced service due to superior acceleration.

Adrian Shooter, CEO of Vivarail, said, "With a new type of battery which we will use in our upcoming production trains, we are confidently predicting a range of 60 miles between charges with only a 10-minute charge time. We look forward to providing emission-free trains and playing a significant part in decarbonising the UK's rail network."
